Coin #1: An Emerging Country
It was the era that laid the groundwork for a modern Canada. With its art nouveau look, the first coin in our three-part First 100 Years of Confederation series travels back in time for a glimpse of Canada between 1867 and 1914.
These were the years in which the locomotive, like the 4-4-0 one featured on this coin, was the engine of change and the driver of progress. The completion of the transcontinental railway in 1885 ushered in a season of unprecedented growth for an emerging country, and by 1914, these ribbons of steel were wrapped around almost every aspect of life in Canada.
Coin #2: Coming of Age
Our journey through history continues! Coin #2 in the First 100 Years of Confederation is an art deco-styled view of Canada from 1914 and 1945 and features one of the first ships built for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN).
This was an era in which a young Canada was navigating uncertain waters made murkier by two wars and a crippling economic depression. Waves of immigration had -landed on our shores and swept west, transforming society and enriching our cultural fabric. But the changing tides of history also carried Canada’s finest and our hopes for peace to places like Vimy, and later, Juno Beach — two key turning points that marked Canada’s coming of age, which is represented on this coin.
Coin #3: Canada Takes Wing
In the first 100 years of Confederation, the story of Canada was shaped by our efforts to bridge distances and come together — first by rail, then by sea, and finally, by air. It is the story that unfolds in the Royal Canadian Mint’s The First 100 Years of Confederation series, a three-part celebration of some of the mechanized history makers that helped shape a modern Canada. Coin #3 takes to the skies and highlights Canada’s active role on the world stage during the post-war years (1945-1967). The reverse features a Canadian-built de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver aircraft that symbolizes the era in which Canada championed peace and celebrated its centennial.
