The Sandhill Crane (Ajijaak) stands as a revered figure among the Anishinabek, its powerful call echoing across generations as a signal for gathering, leadership, and unity. Known as a guiding voice, Ajijaak embodies wisdom, authority, and the strength to lead with purpose.

This first release in the Clan Animals series honours that legacy, capturing the crane’s poised presence among the reeds — a living emblem of leadership and collective responsibility. Through this design, the coin reflects not only the beauty of the animal, but also its deep cultural significance within Anishinabek teachings.

Created in collaboration with Mark Nadjiwan, a member of Neyaashiinigmiing Unceded First Nation, the artwork is rendered in a striking pen-and-ink style inspired by the Woodland tradition. His work brings powerful storytelling and cultural depth to this meaningful series.
