Sometimes the unknown can be scary. Dedicating your time and effort to a new hobby can be a daunting experience; but it doesn't have to be.

Many of us are collectors of some form of art, from comic books to stamps to Pokémon cards and beyond. Its just what we do as humans, we like to collect! The story and history behind our collection of choice differs from others, and that is what makes it unique - your collection is truly yours to enjoy. A simple hobby you possess can often times turn into a real passion - an easy past time that brings you infinite feelings of joy.

Let me introduce you to coin collecting, it might just fascinate you! Each coin you collect will have its own story, and it is up to you to decide whether it is worth to include in the collection you curate for yourself. 

With this guide, we are here to help you test the waters into coin collecting, and gain a newfound appreciation for what these coins are - a true work of art. The rest is up to you! We may be biased, but a coin collection will really spice up your life.

TERMINOLOGY - WHAT IS IT?

Composition: the material of the coin

Face Value: the value of the coin as printed; its legal value

Finish: the final appearance of the coin

Mint: the place where the coin is manufactured by authority of the government

Mintage: the quantity produced

Numismatic: the study of coins

TYPES - WHAT ARE SOME DIFFERENT TYPES OF COINS?

Gold: 99.999% highest purity gold will not rust or decay; most common in small mintage

Silver: 99.99% pure silver can handle extreme temperatures and will not decay

 

Platinum: 99.95% natural platinum will not tarnish; similar to gold in certain properties

Bullion Coins: created from precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum; traded at bullion prices 

Brilliant Uncirculated: those that are not currently in circulation; holds its original lustre and appearance 

Circulated Coins: those that are circulated for day-to-day use

Proof Coins: coins that are specifically designed for collectors; distinct in their visual appeal, design, and high quality finish

ANATOMY - WHAT DOES THE COIN CONSIST OF? 

Obverse: the face/front of the coin ("heads"); this is the side that contains the national emblem or head of parliament

Reverse: the back of the coin ("tails"); this is the side that contains the unique chosen design of your interest

Relief: design on the coin that is raised above the surface

Field: smooth part of the coin that is not used for design

Rim: raised part around the perimeter

Edge: outer border; could be either smooth or jagged

HANDLE & CARE - HOW DO I KEEP MY COINS IN THE BEST SHAPE?

Now that you have become familiar with some common terminology and types of coins, it is important to learn the proper way to take care your treasure.

When handling your coin, make sure to use COTTON GLOVES.

Always pick up your coin by the EDGES, using your thumb and forefinger.

Avoid touching the OBVERSE or REVERSE surface; you don't want to scratch that beautiful art piece!

Limit the chance of dropping your coin; CUSHION THE FALL by placing a soft towel beneath your hold.

Lastly, AVOID SPEAKING OVER THE COIN; droplets of saliva can create difficult-to-remove stains. 

STORAGE - WHERE DO I KEEP MY COINS?

Although your coins are made of metals, it is still of utmost importance to store them properly so that they will not get damaged. Depending on the value of your coins, you have some options:

For HIGH VALUE coins: use PVC-free plastic bags or hard plastic cases; air-tight envelopes can prevent oxidation or scratches on these valuable collectibles 

For LOWER VALUE coins: use acid-free paper sleeves/envelopes; tubes, folders, or albums also suffice
